If you’re interested in playing in SLJO, please complete the joining form at the bottom of this page to join the waiting list. We ask for a minimum standard of Grade 5 and/or some experience of playing in a big band.

Once a space opens up for your instrument, you will be invited to a rehearsal. There’s no charge for anyone attending their first couple of rehearsals – it’s just to give you a taste of our weekly activities and some time to decide whether you’d like to join.

Benefits of membership

All members of SLJO are entitled to come to rehearsals and play at our gigs (some gigs are one to a part to limit the size of the band to match the venue), and are welcome to join us on tour.

You’ll receive a free SLJO T-shirt and have the chance to buy an exclusive SLJO black hoodie to help keep you warm during our outdoor gigs.

We also hope you’ll get the added benefits of improving your musical abilities, making new friends, having new experiences and bringing jazz music to the community.

Once you’ve joined, you’ll be included on the e-mail circulation list to make sure you’re kept up to date with all of the latest news and information, and you’ll also be given access to our intranet site so you can sign up for gigs.

If you’d like to get involved in the running of the group, you can become a member of the Committee, and can also join the Trustees’ Committee of South London Community Music, our parent organisation. If committee meetings aren’t your thing, you’ll also have the opportunity to put your name forward to carry out one-off tasks such as gig management or van driving, which provides good (free!) training and helps you get to know other people in the band.

We actively encourage everyone to contribute to the SLJO in some way or other, enabling us to remain both a well organised and ambitious musical ensemble.
