Our Music
Our music is chosen to reflect the whole range that is written for the conventional big band line-up of 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm section of guitar, keyboards, bass and drums. This includes music associated with Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, as well as more modern popular music arranged for big band.
As a jazz orchestra we also include a clarinet section, and some numbers for flutes. We are expanding our vocals repertoire, with both in-house singers and, notably, the rising star Liz Cass.
We have a music sub-committee to encourage band members to be closely involved with the development and variety of the repertoire.
In 2006 and 2007 we had several jazz works written specially for us, by John Holland and Roger Cawkwell. Last year we premiered a piece written especially for our group by Philip Venables through our Adopt-a-Composer Award (see separate section) and will continue to work with him this year on some exciting new material.
